People with HIV/AIDS in Africa

image of two African sisters

In 2006 an estimated 38.6 million people worldwide were infected with HIV with an estimated 2.8 million adults and children losing their lives to AIDS.

Sub-Saharan Africa has just over 10% of the world's population but is home to over 60% of all people living with HIV and in 2005 2.4 million adults and children died of AIDS.

To put the global situation in perspective the death toll to HIV/AIDS is the equivalent to the Asian Tsunami of 2004 occurring every 5-6 weeks every year.

Go to www.unaids.org to find out the true extent of this situation.

What can be done to help in Africa?

In responding to the overwhelming need we aim to provide funding for an innovative, educational project in Kenya where existing HIV/AIDS practitioners are trained and equipped in the process of community transformation.

The programme is run by St Paul's Institute of Lifelong Learning (SPILL) in Kenya.

  • Each student is required to work with 20-25 volunteers in their community to form a Community Transformation Group which in turn reaches around 440 family members affected by HIV/AIDS in their particular community
  • The result is an incredibly effective student:beneficiary ratio of 1:440
  • The 3 year course costs a total of around £3,500 per individual student
